Had a wide-ranging discussion at the virtual Aspen Security Forum yesterday evening, organised by The Aspen Institute. US-China relations was a major focus, but we also touched on the pushback against globalism and its impact on trade, and of course, the pandemic.

While US-China relations remain difficult, neither side should put the other down. Countries hope that both will engage each other, restore trust and avoid conflict. To deal with challenges like pandemics and climate change, all countries must work together. Unfortunately COVID-19 has not brought countries closer; in fact, often the contrary.

Glad that US leaders are actively visiting Asia-Pacific countries. There are many new opportunities for regional cooperation, such as the digital and green economy. I look forward to meeting US Vice President Kamala Harris when she visits Singapore in a few weeks’ time.

You can listen to my conversation at the Forum with moderator Evan Osnos in the video below.

On this page I talk about the things I’m doing and thinking about, but I would also like to hear from you, about what we can do together for Singapore.
